In AIX going back to AIX 4.1 the device drivers are automatically installed for each detected device that is not already installed when you run cfgmgr -i. This is what is run during installing installation and boot of an AIX machine. So during initial installation and boot the devices are discovered, devices which require a driver are identified, the device driver is installed from the installation media or path without user interaction.
