Collecting of IP addresses and dropping cookies on visitors have long been done by e-commerce websites for target advertising, traditionally through website visits. I am not sure how novel it is to target advertise through tracking online transactions (since the purchase will require a visit to that website anyway). Although if this patent suggest tracking the user's shopping pattern, it'll be interesting to see how it can "predict" what the user will want to buy next.

I think a few start-ups are already doing this idea.

This invention seems exactly like what Facebook does with user profiles. It uses profile information to generate advertisements based on the information. It does not sound unique at all
