I think some public utilities already have this such as Smart Grid.Aaron Alpert (about 2 years ago)
Cogeneration is a well-known technology. It's commonly used in Eastern European nations, such as Russia. Basically, a power plant loses about 2/3 of its energy to thermal losses, and the idea is to transfer that heat to another medium. In Russia, for example, the power plant generates not just your electricity, but also your hot water.
In response to Min Su Chung's question about what distinguishes this invention (from, say, what's done in Russia) is that the cogeneration is done at the residence rather than at the power plant. Just as there are electric losses in transmission lines, there are thermal losses as the hot water moves from the power plant to the the residences. This invention minimizes those losses.
At an industrial size power generation facility, the waste heat is very high temperature, meaning good heat transfer to the water. For a home-sized engine, the waste heat wouldn't be as hot, which, I'm guessing, is why there isn't very much home-based cogeneration. However, this inventor is using the waste heat to pre-heat the water, and then further heat it in the combustor, getting it to the same temperature as what comes out of a standard water heater.Doug Fung (about 2 years ago)
I believe the patent identifies co-generation from a different source. There are similar systems for wind/solar energy...PEER TO PATENT ACTIVITY
