This reference teaches placing sensors on rolls of material, with the example given being paper in printing applications (much like the current application) with the goal to control feed control and initiate a signal to replace the roll before defects manifest.

The reference discloses tape feeding control including a sensor which detects the amount of tape left on a roll and in response effectuates braking and splicing. The amount of tape remaining on the roll is also equivalent to a stop limit based on the distance from the end of the roll.
