It is not at all clear to me what exactly a "fault" is as referenced by the patent application and the claims. I'm wondering whether this is a flaw on behalf of the patent writer, or merely my lack of knowledge in the realm of computer science?

In computer science, the word fault is somewhat synonymous to the word failure. You can imagine all instances of the word fault as being replaced by "failure" or "error". Fault-detection is the detection of errors/failures. Fault-tolerance is the ability of a system to continue operation (possibly at a reduced capacity/ability) despite a problem.
