Microsoft's family of Fawcett patents covers remote software upgrades. They include 5,845,077, 6,073,214, and 6,327,617, with priority dates that reach back to 1995. These patents generally describe taking a software inventory of a remote computer and having a server push out patches to upgrade the computer's software. If you search "Fawcett AND 'hardware inventory'" in the USPTO database, you'll find several patents that cover the immediate application. I'll map one.
