Prospects/Shortcomings
Habit-based authentication removes the need for previous biometric scanning devices that are more costly and complex. This system creates an advantage in that the information pertaining to recognition cannot be inferred by third parties. The use of a password is eliminated and the system’s recognition of expected pattern use is the factor by which it determines accessibility. This new system can reduce maintenance and system costs. The system is also easily adapted to various electronic devices making this idea optimally user/industry friendly. However, it is a new means by which to authenticate the user. Getting businesses to adapt such a new method could be problematic.
Business Sense Analysis
This habit-based authentication patent makes a lot of business sense because it can be applied across numerous industries. Mobile communication terminals such as a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) and laptop are widely spread in our lives. In these terminals, many kinds of personal information are installed, like an address book, instant messages, schedule and so on. In addition, these terminals may be set to allow the user access to e-commerce sites or on-line banking that require personal authentication. Therefore, a habit-based authentication is needed to protect the personal information and to prevent malicious access when the terminal is stolen or lost.
Recommendation
We recommend the idea of habit-based authentication be assigned a patent due to the overwhelming importance of security in today’s business environment. The increases in wireless telecommunications and portable electronic devices have caused a greater need for authentication. Habit-based authentication provides a reliable source of biometrics at a lower cost which therefore creates a competitive advantage among firms using the device.
The development of new biometric technologies, the increasing frequency of identity fraud and discussions about a national identity card have emphasized the need to rethink our approach to privacy, which was developed almost 30 years ago. The higher standard of protection afforded to sensitive information is to be welcomed for habit-based authentication.
Current habit-based authentication can be applied to computer logins, ATMs, grocery stores, airport kiosks, driver’s licenses, internet banking, national ID cards, forensics, amusement park pass holders, and verification for television home shopping which have all already adopted the basic biometric systems. E-businesses use verification for telephone transactions, background checks, and social service benefits. Biometrics are already being used in the US Department of Defense as well as the travel and transportation industry. Therefore, with the passing of this patent, all industries and organizations should easily adopt the new habit-based authentication.
Congress and a few states have already encouraged a biometric authentication approach by enacting laws to encourage the use of biometrics as an e-signature in e-commerce and e-government transactions. Large industries like casinos have high stakes in criminal detecting and are always on the forefront of new technology. Most likely, they would be willing to adopt this new authentication method. Overall, there are many important aspects and real world examples of why this patent should be adopted and of the potential success that it can entail.
